Have you walked or biked around the trails at Island Lake Conservation Area yet? It is a great place for a weekend stroll, a morning jog, to cast a line, catch some fish and enjoy some time with family or friends.
The Vicki Barron Lakeside trail, an 8km trail that goes around Island Lake, was built by our local Orangeville, Mono, and Caledon community. The Friends of Island Lake, along with Credit Valley Conservation Foundation, and Credit Valley Conservation, provided the vision, leadership, dedication, and labour to build this community treasure.
However, our work is not yet done. The Friends of Island Lake continue to work on improving the trails and trail amenities so it can handle the ever growing number of trail users. For example, part of the funds raised this year through our 9th annual Bass Derby funded the construction of two new accessible fishing piers along the banks at Island Lake. For us, it is essential that anyone have the opportunity to spend the day nature.
The Friends of Island Lake host several fundraising events throughout the year – the biggest is our Bass Derby, with over $235,000 raised over the past 9 years to help pay for the $1.8 million dollar cost of the construction of the Vicki Barron Lakeside Trail. We have had a lot of community support, especially from consistent Bass Derby sponsors Sunshine Landscape Design and Construction as well Brookfield Homes. We are excited about our upcoming 10th year, which promises to be our biggest one yet, and we will be looking for sponsors.
We also host Trail Donations Days in the spring and fall to ask trail users and the community to continue to support the trails. We would like to invite you to join us for Trail Donation Day and make a donation toward at this event.
There are several easy ways you can donate:
Your donation will help make the trails better for everyone who uses them – and if you donate on the trails you will be entered to win a bag of Ontario grown Qunita Quinoa!
We would like to express our thanks to the Fall 2017 Trail Donation Day sponsors: Canadian Tire Orangeville, Team Grime RCR Royal LePage Realty, Country 105, Blackstock Ford Lincoln, Toppers Pizza Orangeville, Lord Dufferin Centre Retirement Residence, Country Trades Inc., Dufferin Lawn Life, Hallmark Toyota, Quinta Quinoa, and Starview Financial Advisors.
If you are interested in supporting any of our future events (Family Day, Ice Derby, Spring Trail Donation Day, Seniors Day, Bass Derby) please contact Jacob Pries at the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation – we’d love to showcase your brand, your business, and how much trails and nature mean to you. Thank you!
See you on the trail.
